Rats are larger than mice, more cautious around new objects in their environment (which is why they can be harder to trap without the right approach), and capable of more serious gnawing damage to structures and wiring.

Norway rats typically burrow and nest at ground level or in basements, while roof rats nest higher up in attics and trees — the distinction matters for where a specialist focuses exclusion and trapping effort.
